History & who we are

History

Inspired by an organisation founded in 1974 in California, Lorraine McDowell, Andrea Delannoy, Wendy Keller, François Aye, Florence Coulin Talabot and Nathalie Pataki realised that it is often difficult for young girls to access STEM subjects (science, technology, engineering and mathematics). This career choice still represents nowadays a real challenge for many of them.

Faced with this need and growing demand in the Lake Léman region, they decided to found together, in 2011the association Élargis tes Horizons Genève (ETH).

Elargis tes Horizons Genève is a non-profit organisation recognised as being of public utility.

The community

Volunteers

Without the help of almost 80 volunteersthe biennial event could not take place. Among them are some young women, former participants, who enthusiastically return to support the event, taking on various roles such as welcoming guests, supervising participants, supporting the workshop and stand leaders, setting up furniture and taking photos for social media.

Workshop and stand leaders

Approximately 120 workshop and stand leaders participate in the biennial event, some of whom have been involved for many years, always bringing enthusiasm and smiles. Mostly women who are experts in STEM fields, they play a central role in sharing their personal journeys with girls and offering hands-on activities to show girls that these careers are exciting and accessible.

Sponsors and partners

Our funding relies mainly on our sponsors and partners, some of whom have been with us since the very beginning. Thanks to them and our partners, some of whom have also been with us since the first editions, the event continues to grow and flourish.

The committee

The Elargis tes Horizons committee currently comprises eleven members, whose commitment and expertise contribute to the development and visibility of the association.

Summary of the annual report 2024

In 2024, Elargis tes Horizons organised a dozen scientific outings and a new edition of our Biennial Event. The Biennial Event, featuring 24 interactive workshops and the 20 stands in the Discovery Fair, was a resounding success. More than 400 young girls took part, a record number that reflects the growing commitment to and strong foothold of the event in the Geneva calendar. The girls were able to take part in this event free of charge thanks to sponsors and donors who covered all the costs of organising it. Feedback from a survey confirms the quality of the organisation, the relevance of the topics covered and the success of the Discovery Fair, while recommending some useful improvements.
